As part of the 2020 Budget Digital Business Plan, the government announced the implementation of the Modernising Business Registers (MBR) program which will establish the new Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) and streamline how you register, view and maintain your business information with government.

The first part of this program is the introduction of Director ID’s which kicks in from 1st November 2021. Director ID’s are unique identifiers that directors will apply for once and keep forever.

How to apply

The first step for all directors in this process will be to get your MyGovID if you don’t have it setup already. This is a simple 3 step process

Step 1: Download the MyGovID app

Step 2: Enter your full name, DOB and email address

Step 3: Setup Standard or Strong Identity strength by verifying two Australian identity documents

Full process can be found here – https://www.mygovid.gov.au/set-up

You will then need to gather all the required info in order to apply on the ABRS website for a Director ID

  1. Proof of TFN
  2. Proof of residential address held by the ATO
  3. Two documents to verify your identity.

When you need to apply

When you must apply for your director ID depends on the date you become a director.
